A New York City man is suing Jet Blue for more than two-million dollars because he says a pilot made him give up his seat to a flight attendant and sit on the toilet for more than three hours on a flight from California. Gokhan Mutlu says in court papers the pilot told him to "go 'hang out' in the bathroom" about 90 minutes into the San Diego to New York flight because the flight attendant complained that the "jump seat" she was ****igned was uncomfortable, the lawsuit said. Mutlu was traveling on a "buddy p****," a standby travel voucher that Jet Blue employees give to friends. Initially, Mutlu was told a flight attendant had taken the last seat on the plane, but then he was advised she would sit in the employee "jump seat," meaning he could have the last seat, the lawsuit said. The pilot told him and-hour-and-a-half into the five-hour flight that he would have to relinquish the seat to the flight attendant, court papers say. But the pilot said that Mutlu could not sit in the jump seat because only Jet Blue employees were permitted to sit there. When Mutlu expressed reluctance to go sit in the bathroom, the pilot, who was not named in the lawsuit, told him that "he was the pilot, that this was his plane, under his command, that (Mutlu) should be grateful for being on board."--Originally reported by The ****ociated Press. |

Special agents from the Inspector General's Office searched the employee's home last week and found the undelivered mail, some of which is five or six years old. First-cl**** mail will be delivered to the intended addresses after consultation with the U-S Attorney's Office. Some of the undelivered mail consists of fliers and coupons. Postal inspectors were tipped off last Tuesday by a meter reader who became suspicious after discovering a lot of undelivered mail on the back deck of the employee's residence.--Originally reported by The Raleigh News and Observer. |

A 20-year old man was arrested early Sunday morning after he threw candy at a Des Moines, Iowa police officer. Sean McGuire, a Drake student living in Des Moines, was arrested at about 2:30 a-m at the ****-and-Go after he allegedly threw several M-and-M candies at Officer Theodore Lister Stroope, according to a police report. McGuire was charged with ****aulting a police officer. Stroope was conducting an investigation with an intoxicated hit-and-run suspect at the convenience store when the incident occurred. The report said Drake security guards on the scene noticed multiple M-and-Ms falling on the ground near Stroope. Stroope then turned around as one candy hit him on the left shoulder. McGuire told officers he threw the candy because he was "sticking up for his friend," the man suspected of the hit and run. Stroope took McGuire to the Polk County Jail, but not before McGuire urinated all over the back seat of Stroope's squad car.--Originally reported by The Des Moines Register. |

A Malaysian woman woke up to a real-life nightmare, discovering that the naked man who had slipped into her bed in the middle of the night was a thief, not her husband, a newspaper said on Tuesday. The 36-year-old housewife was asleep when the thief, noticing that her husband was fast asleep on the couch, quietly stripped off and lay down beside her. The dozing woman's suspicions were raised when she spoke to him and his voice sounded strange, the paper said. She then went to another room and found her husband fast asleep on the couch. That's when she screamed, causing the thief to flee by leaping out the window with the stolen items.--Originally reported by The Malaysia Star |

A 52-year-old Cohoctah Township, Michigan man died Saturday after his 94-year-old mother accidentally ran him over with an all-terrain vehicle, police said. Ronald Smith was pronounced dead at the scene at his mother's farm. Smith was working with his mother, Mary Smith, around 12:30 p-m at the property. Ronald Smith was opening a gate when his mother apparently lost control of the Kubota R-T-V 900 utility vehicle she was riding and hit the gate, then caromed off the gate and struck her son. Cigarette vending machines in Japan may soon start counting wrinkles, crow's feet and skin sags to see if the customer is old enough to smoke. The legal age for smoking in Japan is 20 and as the country's 570-thousand tobacco vending machines prepare for a July regulation requiring them to ensure buyers are not underage, a company has developed a system to identify age by studying facial features. By having the customer look into a digital camera attached to the machine, Fujitaka Co's system will compare facial characteristics, such as wrinkles surrounding the eyes, bone structure and skin sags, to the facial data of over 100-thousand people. Hajime Yamamoto, a company spokesman, says, "With face recognition, so long as you've got some change and you are an adult, you can buy cigarettes like before. The problem of minors borrowing (identification) cards to purchase cigarettes could be avoided as well."--Originally reported by Reuters. |

Tom Owens and Diana Helmer moved to Perry, Iowa in December and engaged in an unusual habit. They knew no one but waved at everybody. Helmer says, "I've noticed the effects a wave has. When you wave it's like a smile. A smile always changes your mood. You can't smile and not be changed." Okay, some might ask, what's their angle? Owens, 47, and Helmer, 45, say it's not a psychological experiment. Owens says, "We just wanted to be nice to people...that's our secret plot." Perry is big enough -- population 87-hundred -- to lean more toward the rarely waving, impersonal city than the obligatory, wave-happy Iowa town. Perry Mayor Viivi Shirley says, "Isn't it interesting that this couple is friendly and people think they are nutty?" Shirley says the couple is for real, adding, "In my former life, I was a marriage and family counselor. I have a high detector for fake. They are utterly charming and very earnest."--Originally reported by The Des Moines Register. |

Dallas police met a Southwest Airlines plane at Dallas Love Field yesterday after flight staff reported that a p****enger refused to stop using his mobile phone during the flight. Joe David Jones, 50, was cited for disorderly conduct. The incident occurred during a Southwest flight from Austin to Dall****outhwest spokeswoman Brandy King says, "After multiple requests, the flight attendants were not successful in getting the p****enger to get off the phone." According to a Dallas police report, flight attendants had asked Mr. Jones to turn off his cell phone and he responded with, "Kiss my [behind]." When asked again, he stated, "Kiss my [behind]. Not happening." He remained on the phone for about 20 minutes. The pilot radioed the incident to the Love Field tower and Dallas police were notified. Officers met Jones at the gate and he continued to "exhibit disorderly conduct," police said. Federal Aviation Administration regulations prohibit any use of mobile phones except when the aircraft is on the ground.--Originally reported by The Dallas News |
