WEIRD BUT TRUE NEWS:
|
About 45-feet beneath the ocean's surface off the coast of Florida lies a cemetery with gates, pathways, plaques and even benches. The Neptune Memorial Reef is seen by its creators as a perfect final resting spot for those who loved the sea. They hope that one day the reef will cover 16 acres and have room for 125-thousand remains. Gary Levine, a diver who conceived the reef and is now a shareholder in the company that owns it, says, "This is simply as good as it gets." The Neptune Memorial Reef is located in open waters three-and-a-quarter miles off the coast of Key Biscayne, which means any certified diver can visit. The artificial reef's first phase allows for about 850 remains. The ashes are mixed with cement designed for underwater use and fitted into a mold, which a diver then places and secures into the reef. A copper and bronze plaque is installed with the person's name, date of birth and death. There is also a line for a message. --Originally reported by the AP |

A bizarre road rage case in which a man rammed a woman's vehicle with his S-U-V last week took an even stranger turn when he told police his reason for doing it. Leonard Litt told Waukesha, Wisconsin police, "I thought it was my dad that I was ramming and that is why I was doing it," according to the criminal complaint filed against him. "I didn't know it wasn't him." Litt, 30, declined to say any more to the detective about the incident, and no explanation is given in court records about why Litt might have been after his father. Litt was charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety, a felony, and hit-and-run, a misdemeanor. Waukesha police also issued Litt a municipal citation for operating while intoxicated. Court Commissioner Martin Binn said Litt's explanation for the incident was "almost unbelievable." --Originally reported by The Miwaukee Journal Sentinel. |

Authorities in Texas have filed corpse-abuse charges against three men who allegedly removed a skull from a grave and used it as a bong. Kevin Wade Jones Junior, Matthew Gonzalez and a juvenile whose name has not been released are each charged with abuse of a corpse, a misdemeanor. Jones claimed he and his friends used shovels to dig up the body and removed the corpse's head with a garden tool, according to police. Jones also revealed he and the other two boys took the severed head to the juvenile's home, where they used the skull as a "bong" to smoke marijuana. The Harris County District Attorney's Office confirmed that misdemeanor abuse of corpse charges have been filed in the case. Police found the cemetery and a grave that had been disturbed but are still investigating the rest of the story. Houston police believe the teens disturbed the grave of an 11-year-old boy who died in 1921.--Originally reported by The Houston Chronicle. |

A two-year-old girl bouncing on a bed bounced out an open second-story window in Denver last week, but the toddler appears to have escaped with only cuts and bruises, authorities said. The little girl, who was not identified, was playing with two siblings. Her mother was at home; her father was at work. In statement, police said, "It is important to remember with warmer weather not to allow children to play near windows. Even window screens can give way leading to accidents. Do not place furniture under windows and do not open windows wide enough children can fit through." Police have not determined whether any charges are appropriate. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ POP TRIVIA: On tv's "The Facts Of Life", Tootie's real first name was Dorothy. |
